Acquiring The Right Talent

Our company is in the people business. Our business helps your business achieve success. We’ll identify, recruit and help you hire the right people. We also help you successfully integrate them into your company so they can deliver results.

If you’re about to pull the trigger on a new hire, hit the pause button to consider your options. Take a quick test. The answers will help you, either by confirming your decision to move forward. Or they will help give you just cause for further pause. Either way, you’ll make a better decision.

– Six months from now, what specific metric(s) will you measure to confirm this was a successful hire?

– If you define a ‘perfect hire’ as 100% of what you initially hoped to find, how does this person rate?

– When you consider your evaluation of his/her qualifications, previous track record and personality,

What’s the most likely outcome of your decision to hire him/her?

A) I’m confident this person will consistently exceed my expectations.

B) I’m reasonably confident this person is likely to become another average hire.

C) This person will probably struggle in some key areas and require significant development.

D) I don’t have a good sense of how this person will perform in this role.

Several other critical considerations also need review.

– If your position has been open a long time, are you motivated to get somebody, anybody on board?

– What’s your batting average on previous hires?

– Where have your best hires come from?

Finally, in the urgency to get this done, managers sometimes lose sight of  two imperatives:

1)  Every person you hire is a direct reflection on you. Your name is on them and theirs is on you.

2)  Filling your position is an opportunity to upgrade your function. The person you hire will either improve the effectiveness of your department (and your career). Or your new hire will cause you to wonder, “What was I thinking?”   So what are you thinking?

What needs to change?

  •  Do you have an effective, on-going strategy for acquiring the best talent?
  • Does your strategy consistently offer you a choice from among the kind of people you were hoping to find, in a timely  manner?
  • Are you confident the people you hire will move your program to the next level, and beyond?
